Road trip: Day 20

Woke up this morning to lots of construction noise.  We had a great view from our room, but were really close to where the new building is being constructed.  The manager was wonderful and moved us to a room that has just as wonderful a view, but we can't hear the cranes and hammering.   Much better!

Bye bye, Mr. Crane.

Our plan was to run into town to get a few things, be back by noon and spend the day by the pool.  Our first errand was to go to Los Cabos Magazine.  They sell vouchers for select restaurants, activities and such for 35-50% off.  We have done this many times in the past and they are great.  Whatever you don't end up using, you can return for a full refund.  Next stop was the Academy of Cosmetology so Brett could get a haircut.  His haircut turned into a haircut, pedicure and massage for him and a pedicure, hair cut and color plus highlights for me.  All that was only 1100 pesos ( $88 US)!!  And to top it off, I love my new haircut!

Our last stop was the health food store to get some gluten free bread.  Yikes!  110 pesos ($8.80 US) for a package of 4 bagels.  And here we thought it was expensive to be gluten-free in the US.

When we finally got back to room, we quickly put on our suits and enjoyed what was left of the sunshine.

Just before dinner, we learned that the resolution to prohibit landfills within 2 miles of the Duck River in Maury County passed unaminously.  That was such a huge relief to hear!! We felt a little like we just won the lottery!  Winning clean water and clean air, along with not losing major equity in our house called for a celebration!

So even though we weren't very hungry, we headed to Baja Peppers and used one of our vouchers we purchased this morning.  It was a great meal.  We both had prawns that were stuffed with cream cheese and crab and then wrapped in  bacon.  Wow!  And for two people who weren't very hungry, we also managed to have dessert of flan and cheesecake.  All that plus drinks and espresso with dessert was 654 pesos.  Since we paid with vouchers, it was about $34 US.

Today was a great example of Hertan travel.  We are often asked how we can afford to travel so much and do what we do.  Hint.  We're frugal.  That's why we're trying to list prices on this blog.  We want people to know that you can travel well on a budget. I'm not going to say that the ambience is the same, but it would have cost us more for just one massage at the resort than for all of our services at the Cosmetology Academy.

Speaking of resorts, that's where a lot of your travel dollars go.  We bought a timeshare 13 years ago and use that for most of our travel. For us, having a kitchen is paramount as we can save on food costs and it's also easier being gluten-free.  Although traveling in Mexico is pretty easy as most everything is corn based.  The rack rate for the room we're staying in now is over $700 a night.  Of course, virtually no one pays rack rates, but people do pay hundreds of dollars a night.  We had a week of our timeshare available so we traded to stay here.  The exchange fee is $164 and our yearly timeshare maintenance fees are $735 so we paid $900 for the week.  The previous 4 rooms we've rented in Cabo were $199 week!  You read that right, only $28 per day!!!  We get these often through our timeshare getaways and our friends can use them as well.  So, if you're going on vacation, let us know and we'll see if we can find you a deal.  They aren't always there, but it certainly pays to check!

Sunset from our new room.
