Road trip: Day 13

It was really windy today.  The plan to go kayaking first thing in the morning was changed as soon as we looked outside and saw the entire bay was whitecaps.  Onto plan B.

We decided to take a drive to see Mission San Francisco Javier.  It's 23 miles off Hwy 1 and while our guidebook says it's still a dirt road and high clearance vehicles are recommended, we had heard it has since been paved most of the way.  It has actually been paved all the way which was another nice surprise.  It's amazing how many roads have been paved in the past few years!

It was a pretty drive through the Sierrra de la Giganta.  Although paved, there were still a few spots where the water would cross the road.  There were also several spots where the road was recently washed out.

That's my dad hanging out the sunroof!

Again, we needed to be watchful of cows in the road.

On the way, we passed a very small mission in Las Parras.

The population of San Javier is less than 150.  The mission was completed in 1758 and is considered one of the main sanctuaries on the peninsula.  Every December 2, thousands of pilgrims come here from all parts of Mexico.

On the way out of town, we passed this guy who was nice enough to stop so we could take this photo of him and his horse, Cuervo.

Hopefully tomorrow will be warmer and we can spend some time in the sun:-)
