Road trip: Day 38

It was misty and gloomy when we left Arcata this morning.  Even so, the views were beautiful as we drove through the Redwood Forest.

We came upon this sign and they weren't kidding,  There were elk everywhere!  They are such beautiful animals.

Yes, it's a tourist trap, but when you're in the redwoods, it's almost obligatory that you pay $5 to drive through a tree.  It's proof that Brett loves me, as we added about 4 hours to the trip so that we could go through the  redwoods.  It's been almost 20 years since the last time I was up here and we were so close, I couldn't imagine not taking a detour.

Another must is to see Paul Bunyan and the Blue Ox at the Trees of Mystery.  They weren't open yet when we came through, so just got the picture and didn't do the tour.

Of course, we had to keep our eye out for this guy.

The shoreline of the northern California coast with it's rough waves, ragged rocks and tree lined shores is magnificent.

Got to Oregon and stopped for lunch.  Once you get into the Pacific Northwest, you can find lots of places that have gluten free items.  (I picture everyone living in Oregon or Washington as being Whole Foods shoppers.)  Brett thoroughly enjoyed onion rings for the first time in almost a decade.

Next stop was Washington.  We stayed with our friends, Adam and Nicole, who we met June 2012 while on vacation in Cabo.  We went to a wonderful restaurant and brewery in downtown Portland.  It had the best gluten free bread I'd ever eaten.  In my mind I kept thinking they made a mistake and gave me regular bread, but I never got sick, so it must have been right.  If you're gluten-free and can move anywhere, I suggest Portland.  The were loads of restaurants and bakeries to choose from as well as gf beer on tap.

After dinner, we went back to their house, visited and chilled out with a movie.  It was nice to just kick back.

Adam and Nicole got married this past summer.  God has blessed them with one another and it's great to see them happily adjusting to married life and starting out in their first home.  Those are such fun times!

Ah, the joys of camera angles.  They really aren't two feet taller than us.

  1. Next time you pass through Oregon, remember that there are plenty of cousins in the Portland area!
