My 40th birthday was quickly approaching and I had a few items left to complete to hit 40 things by the end of the year, so....
On December 23rd, we took Amtrack to New Orleans. I had never taken a train like that and I really enjoyed it. We had our own roomette and it was worth the extra money for a 7 hour trip, especially considering it includes your meals. I have to admit though, that next time I'll take along some motion sickness medicine as Brett and I were taking turns in the seat that faced forward since we were both a little nauseous.
We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in New Orleans. The city is both beautiful and interesting and I would have like to have had more time to really take it in. The Bourbon St thing is not our thing, but we did experience it. Been there, done that, no need to do again. I completed my "eat Creole/Cajun in New Orleans" at a oyster restaurant on Bourbon St. It didn't take me long to realize I'm not a fan. That makes two new foods for me this year and I didn't like either one(remember the sushi? I think I'm a simple meat and potatoes country girl!
On Christmas Day, my longtime friend - and by longtime, I think we've known each other for 32+ years!, came down to New Orleans with her family. It was so great to see her and spend the holiday with her and her family.
The next morning, we boarded the train for home and I had 7 hours to focus on learning the locations of all the countries in the world. I had the Western Hemisphere down, but had a long way to go to know all the countries. Luckily, we found a great app for Brett's phone and it made learning the rest of them very easy. By the end of the day, I could easily tell you where every country was in the world. Now, how long that info actually stays in my brain is left to be seen.
All in all, a wonderful trip and 3 more items off my list!!
